Nichiren Buddhism includes the largest divisions, which are Nichiren Shu, Nichiren Shoshu, and Soka Gokkai International. Each branch has its own specific practices. However, there are general practices that all branches recognize as true to Nichiren Buddhism. The practices are considered to be the secret to true happiness.

  1. Practicing Nichiren Buddhism

    • 1

      Recite the mantra, "Nam myoho renge-kyo," also called The "Daimoku." Nam myoho renge-kyo invokes the ancient Buddhist text, The Lotus Sutra. The mantra brings one to Buddhahood, which Nichiren believers say can occur in one lifetime.

      Chant the Daimoku at the altar on which resides the Gohonzon, a blessed image of an inscription by Nichiren.

      Worship the honzon, which is placed on a kaidan (sacred altar or platform). Honzon is a mandala that represents the three forms of Sakyamuni, the original Buddha and the Buddha nature in human beings.

      Read the Lotus Sutra. This work contains the highest teachings of Sakyamuni Buddha.

      Study the writings of Nichiren, founder of Nichiren Buddhism. Nichiren disicples consider these letters and essays to be the main sources for study.

      Act with compassion every day for others' benefit.
