Find out if you need an International Driving Permit. If you are traveling abroad, and you are planning on driving, you will need an International Driving Permit. Even if you are traveling to an adjacent country, it is always a good idea to have an IDP, just in case you get stopped.

Find out what you need to obtain an International Driving Permit. You will need a valid United States Driver's License, two passport-style photos of yourself and a check or money order to pay the $20 fee for your International Driving Permit.

Apply for your International Driving Permit in person. There are two organizations that can issue you an International Driving Permit in the United States: The American Automobile Association (AAA), or The American Automobile Touring Alliance (also known as the National Auto Club). A quick web search will turn up the closest location of either office to you.

Apply via mail. You can download the application online and apply to the same companies through the mail. You will need to print out the application for the IDP from the internet, fill it out completely, attach the photos, a signed photocopy of your valid US driver's license and your check or money order for the correct amount. If you are applying for your IDP via AAA, send your application and attachments to 1000 AAA Drive, Heathrow, FL 32745-5063. If you are applying for your IDP via the National Auto Club, send your application and attachments to 1151 E. Hillsdale Blvd., Foster City, CA 94404.

Wait for your delivery. Delivery of your International Driving Permit should take no more than two to three weeks. If it takes longer, call the association's headquarters that you sent you application to in order to track the progress of your permit.
