How to Claim DAR Status
The DAR, or "Daughters of the American Revolution" is a National Society of women who are "dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children." Membership in the DAR is open to any woman, 18 years old or over, who is able to effectively prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution. In order to establish lineage for the DAR, follow these simple steps.

Begin with what you know. Record a family history using information you and other members of your family already know. The names of parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc... are important starting points in your search for information.

Establish proof for what you already know. Birth, death or marriage certificates, family albums, and family Bibles are some common proof that you may already have.

Make a list of the proof that you need to obtain. This will give you a good starting point as you begin to do research and to search for vital documents.

Visit the DAR website and print out a copy of the lineage worksheet, as well as a source sheet. This will be extremely useful in your search for supporting documents and records.

Research and document your family heritage. Visit the genealogy section of the public library, request certificates and records from the office of vital statistics and contact genealogical and lineage societies to get further help with your search.

Request a paper copy of the DAR application. After you have gathered all of the information and established proof of your heritage (from the present back to the Revolutionary War), the last step to fill out the DAR application. Be sure that you include copies of all of the documents and records when you return the application.
