How to Address a Judge
Meeting a judge, whether it be in a court room or in a social setting, can be a daunting experience. If you are having your day in court, you'll be dealing with an intense encounter, regardless of whether you're the plaintiff or defendant. If you are going to meet a judge, here are some steps for addressing the judge in a manner that will make even Emily Post proud.
Things You'll Need

- A poised demeanor

1
Behave yourself. When you enter the courtroom, walk in calmly and quietly with your attorney if you have one. You should be dressed in business attire, such as a suit or nice slacks (or skirt) and a shirt. Your appearance should be neat and well groomed. Do not enter the courtroom loudly. The courtroom is the judge's domain where he is the final authority. Treat the judge's courtroom with respect.
-
2
Be respectful. When you are presented to the judge, always address her as "Your Honor". Other appropriate responses include "Yes, Sir" or "Yes, Ma'am". Only speak when spoken to, and answer any questions in a polite and succinct manner. Do not ramble on in your responses, and do not use slang terms. A judge is to be respected.

3
Make eye contact as the judge tells you his findings or decisions and stand upright. Listen quietly and be serious. Even if the judge says something you disagree with, or says something that upsets you, remain quiet, or whisper to your attorney. Your attorney will address any issues on your behalf.

4
Do what you're told to do. If you are given any instructions to follow, make special note of them. Do what you can to be in compliance with the judge's orders.
Meeting a Judge in a Social Setting
-
5
Dress the part. Make sure your attire is adequate for the setting. If you are attending an evening party, for example, you want to have on the proper formal wear. Again, make sure your appearance is neat and well groomed. You don't want to meet a judge when you aren't looking your best.
-
6
Shake. When you meet the judge, extend your hand for a handshake, and have a nice firm grip. Smile and be as relaxed and confident as you can. A judge can be very intimidating.
-
7
Say it right. It is appropriate to address the judge as "Your Honor". He may then take the opportunity to tell you to address him in a less formal manner. From then on, it is appropriate for you to address him as such.
-
8
Use discretion. As you are conversing with the judge, try to keep in mind that she is not able to comment on specific cases. Keep your questions general in that regard. And, remember, asking a judge for legal advice is not proper etiquette. Be gracious and respectful. The judge has earned your respect through many years of hard work.

Don't forget to enjoy yourself. Relax and let the conversation flow.
