1. Select an appropriate form of education for your end goal. Colleges and universities provide human resource degrees, often called Management and Labor Relation degrees, which provide students with degrees for higher positions within companies upon graduation. Some community colleges offer associate degree programs and certificates of completion, which allow the student to qualify for entry level positions.

2. Determine if management courses are needed. Many companies require human resource training to include some form of management training. This is a precaution, as many professionals will work as management or with HR personnel. Many human resource programs include programs that focus on how to manage large and small groups of employees.

3. Secure up to date human resource training on the new laws and requirements. Since labor laws, tax laws and payroll requirements (including benefits, Social Security and taxation) change on a regular basis, human resource professionals require updated data and course information. These training courses are available at most colleges.

4. Seek out the degree right for you. The highest level of human resource education is an HR Generalist. Other levels include an assistant generalist, payroll manager, and human resource management. Because degree programs will range from one school to the next, determine which program is right for you.

5. Do not overlook the opportunities available through on-line human resource training. Some programs available include COBRA Training, ADA Training, Worker's Compensation Training and FMLA Training.
