Step 1
Visit the Comp USA website and click the "Desktop computers" link. Then, click the "select price range" box and search the prices up to $300. There are quite a few new, brand-name computers. If you consider a refurbished computer, you may get more computer for your money. Refurbished computers will often come with some type of warranty and you can purchase extended protection or service if you feel you need it. You will need to place an order by phone or online with a credit card, as their retail stores are limited. Shipping is generally fast, and costs are minimal.
-
Step 2
Visit such websites as Overstock or Circuit City's pages. Both of these websites not only offer low shipping, but have many models of computers available for under $300. At Circuit City, you can place an order online and even pick it up in the store if you need it immediately.
-
Step 3
Check eBay or other auction websites, and Craig's List, as you may find quite a selection of computers for under $300 that are new or like-new. Be sure to bid or call right away, as computers can be sold very quickly and are in high demand. Be sure the computer works before you make final payment, or pay by credit card. Be aware that these sites do not offer warranties that are reliable.
-
Step 4
Tune in to the shopping channels on TV or the Internet, especially during the later evening hours. The best prices are often at this time, as viewer numbers tend to be lower.
-
Step 5
Purchase a computer at an in-person auction, places of employment or schools, charity auction, closeout or going out of business sale. These are often $300 or less and in good working condition.
-
Step 6
Look at the Dell and HP catalogs, especially around holiday weekends. There are several computer models to choose from that are on sale and are under $300.
