Finding ghosts in Italy is not difficult. With its long and rich history and quaint local culture, you’ll see spirits from the watery depths of Venice to the towering ruins in Rome. Centuries of conflict, plaques, religious fervor and natural disasters have left a ghostly mark on this beautiful country. If you are planning a paranormal visit to this great area, here are a few places to put on your must-see list!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Transportation to and around Italy
  • Tickets for tours for certain locations
  • A local guide if possible
  • Digital camera
  • Digital voice recorder

Step1
See ghosts preserved at Pompeii. We all know the tragic tale of this ancient Roman city and its suffering at the hands of an erupting volcano, but evening visitors claim to hear otherworldly screams, see shadow people and smell sulfur. Talk to staff at the site to get personal stories.
Step2
Photo by versoilvento ~Panoramio Get permission to visit the Poveglia Island in Venice. Also known as the Island of Horror, Poveglia Island was at one time a dumping ground for bubonic plaque bodies and, later, living victims! The reverberation of the suffering souls can still be heard from the water nearby, and anyone who is able to get on the island is usually eager to get off of it just as quickly. It's history as the location for a poorly run psychiatric hospital did nothing to bring peace to this section of land. If you can get permission to visit, be sure to do some EVP work here!
Step3
Photo: getwonder.com Get back on dry land and head out to Lucedio Abbey. Recently investigated by the TAPS team from the SCIFI channels show "Ghost Hunters," this 12th century building once housed Cistercian monks or, as some might refer to them, “monks gone bad.” A place of strange cruelty and scandal, visitors claim to feel a menacing presence and witness a “crying pillar.” One has to wonder if the monks' own insanity was because of a demonic presence. Check it out.
Step4
Take a tour of one of the most familiar sites anywhere in the world, the Roman Coliseum. Cruelty and torture for the sake of entertainment has ensured the restless spirits or residual haunting of the grand structure. Talk to the guards who will share personal experiences and tell stories of otherworldly battles that still occur on the premises. Try some EVP work here.
Step5
Photo: Wikipedia Go to the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome. Part of many haunted Rome tours, this breathtaking structure is featured in the movie “Angels and Demons” soon to be released. It is also home to the remains of the Roman Emperor Hadrian and his family. The hauntings are attributed to the stories that a family was put to death right in the front of the great old building. Legend also has it that the Arch-angel Michael appeared to the people of Rome atop the mausoleum to bring about the end of the plaque in 590. Take a guided tour to hear more spooky stories from this awesome place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Plan ahead. Book some haunted Italy tours for when you are in the area so you can get all of the stories of these historic locations.
