How to Peel a Tomato on a Gas Burner

Since tomato skin is not palatable in stews, soups or sauces, peeling a tomato is the thing to do before adding it to your favorite recipes. Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, vitamins A and C, thiamine, magnesium, potassium, beta carotene, iron, phosphorus, riboflavin and dietary fiber. Cooking or processing the tomato actually increases the lycopene content, making the tomato a delicious and nutritious way to feed a growing family. There are many ways to peel tomatoes, and an easy method of getting the job done is set out for you in the following easy steps. Read on to discover how you can peel a tomato on a gas burner.

Instructions

    • 1

Light a gas burner on your stove and turn the flame down to a medium-low setting.

    • 2

Poke your fork into the tomato firmly so that the tomato stays in place while you are working on the peeling process.

    • 3

Hold the fork firmly and place the tomato approximately 2 inches above the gas burner. As the tomato skin gets hot, it will split, and as it does, turn the tomato above the burner to split it in a different place.

    • 4

Place split tomato on a clean plate to cool, and simply rub the skin off. Repeat Steps 2 to 4 to peel more tomatoes.

Tips & Warnings

  • The fork may get hot during the peeling process--always be careful around an open flame!
