Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your nurseries and garden centers. The UK are known for these. Not all will carry Bonsai trees but the larger, more specialized one should have them in stock. Bonsai is catching on in the UK due to its climate. The temperate nature is good for growing of the trees.

  2. Step 2

Check the stock carefully. good Bonsai trees should always look fresh. Avoid anything that looks wilted as it probably won't survive. If your looking at the white pine version, check the needles. They should be crisp and green. Have a look at the containers and how well kept they are. Check the soil. It should be damp. If the soil is too wet, it will rot the roots. If it is too dry, the plan will dehydrate.

  3. Step 3

Check the tree for wire marks. The trees are quite often wired when shipped. However, if there are deep wire marks cutting into the bark then avoid purchasing these. These damage the tree giving it a much smaller chance of survival.

  4. Step 4

Always buy from nurseries and never from boot sales or backs of cars. These tend to be poor quality at best and at worst could be stolen.

  5. Step 5

Get an agreement in writing from the nursury. What will they promise if the tree dies soon after you buy it? Do they help you with care instructions as well?
