1
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up. If you find yourself curious about the medical billing promotions, ask for the names of previous customers who have used the medical billing business. Don’t let the promoter get away with providing you one or two names as these people might be paid to say good things about the scam. Instead ask for several references to be sure.
-
2
Contact these references and ask them how long they’ve been doing the medical billing business and how much business has it generated? Make sure to interview all the references so as to acquire the most knowledge.

3
Contact organizations for medical billing business and medical claims processors, inquiring about the medical billing field and how much of a market there is for this kind of work. Also contact doctors to see how they handle their medical billing and if they use established, experienced firms or they are willing to go with someone new.
-
4
Ask all of the doctors, medical billing business organizations, and medical claims processors if they are aware of the promoter that contacted you. Also ask if any training is usually required or preferred.
-
5
Check with the local chapter of the Better Business Bureau, the local registrar of contracts and state/federal consumer protection agencies to see if there are any complaints against this particular promoter. Be aware that just because there are no complaints recorded does not mean this promoter is legitimate. Rather, it could just be that nobody has complained of a problem or the problem was settled.
