Teach the kids the purple cow rhyme written by Gelette Burgess. Here it is:“I never saw a purple cow. I never hope to see one.But I can tell you, anyhow, I’d rather see than be one.”Let them learn the rhyme through repetition. First, have them learn to say it in unison. Once they have learned it, they will enjoy “taking turns” with the rhyme. Have one child say the first line, the next child will say the second line, and so on.

Plan a game. Explain that the object of the game is to avoid becoming the purple cow. Dump a few dozen toothpicks on the table; you will have colored one of these (the purple cow) with a purple marker. Tell kids that on their turn they should each take away some toothpicks from the pile—any number from one to three. Play continues until the last player is forced to pick up the purple cow. It will take kids a few times around to catch on to the strategy of the game.

Plan a craft. Kids can easily make a cute “purple cow” by following some simple online directions (see Resources). Simply have them follow the directions and use purple for the color of choice.

Prepare the refreshments. You’ll be serving a purple cow drink and purple filled cookies. To make a purple cow drink, put two scoops of vanilla ice cream into a glass. Pour grape juice into the glass and serve with a straw. For the cookies, empty a can of white frosting into a bowl. Add red and blue food coloring to make purple icing. Put two vanilla wafers together with icing in between them.

Hand out favors. Anything purple would work for party favors, but some suggestions are grape gum or candy, purple pens, pencils, notepads, erasers, purple yo-yos or super balls.
