If you are an artist, 3D modeller or computer game developer, you will find that there are many software programs that enable you to create a realistic digital image of the human face. The award-winning program FaceGen presented here is possibly the best for the realistic output and ease of operation with its user-friendly interface. And a really great feature is that you can download a fully functional trial version to test it out.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with Internet connection
  • Onboard Graphics Card - most computers have these
  • Downloadable FaceGen (free trial software)

Step1
Home page for FaceGen Click on the link listed in the Resources section at the end of this article. Click on the "Download" link as pictured in this screenshot. (There are several products offered by the creators, Singular Inversions, but you want to try the FaceGen Modeller free demo that this link leads to.)
Step2
Selecting the download version Select "FaceGen Modeler...free version" as pictured here. Go through the download process and install it according to the directions. When you are asked to Open or Save, click "Open."The following steps show a brief sampling of the type of operations you can perform.

FaceGen interface. Open the program and look at the interface. On the left is a 3D rendering which you can rotate, zoom and scale. On the right are tabs that open panels for different types of functions.

Rotating Image Try left-clicking on the black background. As you hold the mouse button down, drag your mouse to rotate the image. You will see the 3D aspect of the model.
Step5
Changing Gender Go to the "Generate" tab on the right side. It usually is on top by default. Try moving the sliders under "Gender" up to the top. You will see the image change from androgenous to very male. If you move the sliders to the bottom, the image morphs to a very female appearance.
Step6
Changing Racial Type Go to the bottom section of the "Generate" panel. Move the sliders under "Race Morphing" down to "SE Asian" the 3D image will morph into an Asian type.
Step7
Morphing Expression Change the expression of your model by clicking on the "Morph" tab. The slider positions pictured here generate the smiling expression seen on the 3D model.

Genetic Morphing Click on the tab labeled "Genetic." Click the button labeled "Generate." Images depicting different genetic morphs of your model will appear in the nine image windows.
Step9
Photo Fit preparation Click on the "Photo Fit" Tab. By placing Left, Right and Frontal photographs in the image windows. Following through a few additional steps, you can generate a 3D, textured image from the photographs.
Step10
Final Model using Photo Fit The 3D model in the image window was generated from the three photos placed into Photo Fit. Experiment with the other panels, sliders and settings. Refer to the website for more information, tutorials, user manual and examples. You will enjoy using this innovative and advanced program.
