How to Visit Smith Island, Maryland

Smith Island is a tiny island in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay. Only accessible by boat, this island is inhabited by fewer than 400 people, many of them descendants of the original inhabitants who settled the island in 1657. The local Tidewater accent is even somewhat reminiscent of Elizabethan English, with a little southern drawl. The island's economic mainstay is still crabbing, as it was three centuries ago, although many islanders are now supplementing the watermen's income by catering to the growing tourist trade as off-islanders discover the charm of this out-of-the-way place.
