Things You'll Need:

  • A bachelor's degree in public relations or related field
  1. Step 1

Get a bachelor's degree in public relations or a closely related field, such as fashion marketing and merchandising. A fashion or journalism degree is also very helpful.

  2. Step 2

Work as an intern. An internship at a fashion public relations company, or even with a major retailer, will net you lots of much-needed experience. You don't necessarily have to intern at a PR company. Any media outlet will suffice, such as a fashion magazine or website.

  3. Step 3

Learn how to write a proper press release. You must have knowledge of both basic journalistic styles and fashion topics. You must also be extremely knowledgeable about different fashion designers, major brands and big-name retailers.

  4. Step 4

Start your career as a promotions assistant to an established fashion public relations coordinator. As an assistant, you will learn all the basics and gain hands-on experience.

  5. Step 5

Build and maintain contacts with other fashion public relations coordinators, fashion editors, fashion designers and everyone in the fashion world. These contacts will lead you to higher positions within the fashion industry.
