How to Construct a Horse Barn

Constructing a horse barn takes foresight and planning. You have to understand exactly what it is that you want to accomplish, how much you are willing to spend, and what you have in store for repairs and maintenance. Having these things in mind, you are ready to proceed with the construction of your barn.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what kind of barn you want to build. Are you stabling two horses but also need a tack room and an indoor wash rack? Or do you have ten horses to stable and require two indoor grooming areas, an office and an indoor wash rack? Or perhaps you want just a row of four stalls with an enclosed tack room on the end. Decided what you need and narrow down your choices from there.

    • 2

Draw up your plans. Factor in all the necessities such as electricity, lighting, appliance hook ups, water, flooring, siding and ventilation.

    • 3

Look around. There are barn packages you can purchase, manufactured barns (much like a manufactured home), or you can have an architect draw up your plans. Make this decision. As you go about your research, you will also figure out the costs of building your barn.

    • 4

Figure out a budget. By now you know what you want and how much it will cost. Determine what your budget is. Now you can refine your plans.

    • 5

Check out the laws. Visit the county or city office regarding zoning and land ordinances. Be sure that your plans comply with any regulations prior to building. If you need building permits to begin construction, you can get those, as well.

    • 6

Build the barn. It is time to hire the builder to construct your barn, or buy the barn package and have the company install it.

    • 7

Enjoy your new barn. Once the barn is constructed, you can move your horses in and enjoy.

Tips & Warnings

  • One of the best ways to decide what kind of barn you want is to visit other barns. Tour as many barns as you can. While visiting the barns, talk to the staff and boarders. Ask them what they really like about the facility and if there is anything they would change. This information is worth its weight in gold when preparing to build your facility.

  • Although some are trained and talented enough to construct their own horse barn, most people need to hire professionals for this job. Hiring a professional can save you money and time in the long run. Constructing a barn when you are not trained to do so spells disaster.
