Italian poker is a poker game that is based on the five card draw style of poker. The number of draws you have in Italian poker is limited to one just like in standard five card draw poker. One of the biggest differences among Italian poker and other five card draw poker variations is that you get to see the cards you will be drawing before you discard any cards from your hand. This reduces the luck level that many players complain about in five card draw. If this sounds intriguing, read on to learn how to play Italian poker.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Organize a home poker night with your friends. Italian poker is a game that allows you to play with a moderate number of players at the table when compared to other five card draw variations. Considering the most cards any player can exchange is two, this allows you to have seven players at a table for a game of Italian poker.

  2. Step 2

Deal five face down cards to each player. After all the players have received their five face down cards, each player may look at their own cards.

  3. Step 3

Conduct a betting round. The wagering begins with the player to the left of the dealer.

  4. Step 4

Deal two cards into the center of the table, and place a marker chip below one of them.

  5. Step 5

Exchange cards. Each player in turn has a chance to discard up to two cards from their hand. If a player chooses to discard two cards from their hand, they discard them face down and take both face up cards from the middle of the table. If a player decides to discard just one card, they do not get a choice as to which card from the table to claim. They must take the card with the chip below it.

  6. Step 6

Replenish the draw cards in the middle of the table after each player draws. If a player only takes one card, place the chip under the remaining face up card and flip one more card face up on the table. If a player claims both cards, flip two new cards from the draw deck face up and place the chip under the first card.

  7. Step 7

Conduct the second betting round. After the exchanging round reaches the dealer and he completes his turn there is a betting round. This betting round is started by the player sitting two seats to the left of the dealer.

  8. Step 8

Reveal your cards. All players that have not folded reveal their cards and declare their hand. The player with the highest poker hand wins the pot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some players add in a second round of exchanging after the second betting round. If you decide to do this, repeat Steps 4 through 6 after the second betting round, and conduct a third betting round after the dealer’s second exchange.
  • Winning hands in Italian poker tend to be lower than most other versions of draw poker. This is especially true if you only conduct one card exchange round. A high pair can be good enough to win in Italian poker.
