Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Change of clothes
  • Sleeping bag
  • Personal items
  • Very comfortable broken in walking shoes and several changes of socks
  1. Step 1

Understand that the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer is a series of weekend fund-raising events that take place in the following locales: Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Rocky Mountain area, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. You must be 16-years-old to participate in the walks. You can choose whether you want to walk a marathon (26.2 miles) or a marathon and a half (39.3 miles) over a weekend. In the event you need assistance, the route is always patrolled by supportive, friendly volunteers and staff who will gladly transport you as far as you need.

  2. Step 2

Keep in mind that you will spend the night in the "Wellness Village" where two person tents will be set up. You will get delicious food, hot showers, sinks and bathrooms as well as medical services. Many sites are staffed with volunteer chiropractors and masseuses as well as others who will make sure you are comfortable, healthy and happy. Staying in the Wellness Village enables you to fully participate in the experience, and enjoy the camaraderie of thousands of men and women sharing the experience but you may opt to sleep elsewhere and return in the morning.

  3. Step 3

Remember that walkers are required to raise $1800. While that may seem like a lot of money, most people have no difficulty raising even more than the required amount. The goal of the walk is to raise as much money as possible to provide access to care and to fund research leading to a cure. There are many ways to raise the money and fund-raising help is available both online and at local event offices.

  4. Step 4

If you don't want to walk but still want to make a meaningful contribution, you can become a crew member or a volunteer. If you are a crew member, you are a registered participant and need to pay the registration fee. You do not need to raise any funds. Crew members perform a variety of tasks that range from setting up rest stops to marking the route or anything that is necessary for the well-being and safety of the walkers. Crew members attend an introduction and training meeting before the event. Donors employers can also contribute matching gifts.

  5. Step 5

Keep in mind that volunteers work short shifts on the eve of the event or on Saturday or Sunday. Volunteers are usually sent to areas where additional support people are needed. Volunteers can also work in the months leading up to an event.

  6. Step 6

If you are interested in participating in a walk, or want to learn more about it, you can register for an Introduction Meeting. You can register in person, on line or on the phone. The meeting is free, open to all and lasts about an hour.
