Did the cat leave her marks on the leather sofa? Wondering how to fix it? Don't fret because it is easy to fix. With the proper tools, your couch can be restored. That said, there is no repair that completely does away with cat scratches on leather furniture. Small and slight imperfections will be diminished but large tears need the help of an upholsterer. If your cat is highly destructive and thinks that the sofa is a scratching post, consider either having the cat de-clawed or finding a non-leather couch.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Leather repair product
  • Old English furniture polish
  • Felt tip pen
  • Shoe polish
  • Soft cloth
  1. Step 1

Assess the damage. Look at the couch and study it from various angles. Be sure to have the room well-lit. If the scratches are deep or long, you may want to call an upholstery shop rather than repair the couch yourself. If the scratches are minor (small in length and not very deep), you can probably do the repairs and be happy with the outcome.

  2. Step 2

Choose the items to fix the damage. If the damage is moderate, use the leather repair product. If the damage is mild, you only need to purchase Old English Furniture Polish, shoe polish and a felt tip pen. The leather repair product, shoe polish, and felt tip pen must match the couch exactly. It should be easy to find a leather repair product to match your sofa's color. If you cannot find a shoe polish or pen that matches the sofa, just use the Old English furniture polish.

  3. Step 3

Use the leather repair product. In this scenario, you have moderate damage. Use the leather repair product exactly as recommended on the package.

  4. Step 4

Wipe on the Old English furniture polish. In this scenario, you have very mild damage. Wipe on the Old English Furniture Polish with a soft, clean cloth. Let the polish dry.

  5. Step 5

Assess the damage. If the Old English furniture polish is not enough to treat the scratches, get the shoe polish and felt tip pen.

  6. Step 6

Add the shoe polish. Very carefully, add a bit of shoe polish to the scratch. Be very gentle and careful. Apply the shoe polish to the scratch only, rub gently with the cloth and let the area dry.

  7. Step 7

Assess the damage. If the scratches are still visible, you can take a felt tip pen and gently mark the scratch. Be sure the colors of the pen and couch match exactly. Let the area dry.

  8. Step 8

Assess the damage. Your couch should be repaired and the cat scratches should not be visible. If you still see marks and you have exhausted these steps, contact an upholstery repair shop for assistance and advice.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cats like to claw and scratch. Purchasing a scratching post is helpful as they can use this instead of your couch.
