Servers run server applications. These applications allow users to access the server, as well as allow the server to send information back to the users. Dedicated servers for high-load require higher quality industrial drives and fans for optimum performance. Lack of GUI (Graphical User Interface) allows servers to process data faster than the home PC. Also, the server doesn’t need additional video adapters. Servers are excellent for backing up data, or as a remote storage remedy for your clogged workspace. In this article you will learn to back up your files to an online server using FTP (File Transaction Protocol). Backing up your files to another online computer is less expensive than other methods of data storage or backing up your files. Eventually we all need to back up our files or lose them.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Internet connection
  • Web host/ website
  • FTP software
  1. Step 1

Gain access to an FTP Server. Go to geocities.yahoo.com to get yourself a free web hosting package. You can use this to store your data or back up your files using their simple FTP program.

  2. Step 2

Acquire an FTP Client for ultimate performance. Visit Filezilla. Download their free FTP Client software.

  3. Step 3

Click the appropriate download button for your computer system. There is one for all systems, and another for windows only.

  4. Step 4

Begin uploading your files to your FTP host. Ensure that you read the requirements on file size and file extensions. Some web hosts require you to change the file extension “html” to “htm”, and “jpg” to “jpeg.” There are some services that require you to capitalize your file extensions for graphics, such as JPG or GIF.

  5. Step 5

If you are using the online method, simply log in to your web host site using your username and password.

  6. Step 6

Select the “Control Panel” then click on “File Manager.”

  7. Step 7

    Click “Up load files.”

  8. Step 8

Locate the text box areas with the buttons labeled “browse files.” Click the “browse files” button. Your computer files will be displayed. Simply select the files you want to upload. You may have to upload one file at a time.

  9. Step 9

    Click "Upload.”

  10. Step 10

Click on the check boxes to select your files in the control panel/file manager interface. Select “cut” or “move” to relocate your files. You do not want your files in the public folder. You will create a new folder and label it “Backup Files.” Place your files in this folder. You can come back and update the files whenever you like, and it is absolutely free to do so with Yahoo Geocities.

  11. Step 11

Use a shell program for FTP automated backup of your files, or you may also try Microsoft FTP service provided in the resources section of this article. Free backup information is also provided.
