How to Dye Black Hair Blond

How to Dye Black Hair Blondthumbnail
It can be difficult to dye black hair blond.

A few things are just hard to get rid of; dyed black hair is one of those things. Whether you made a mistake or just want a change, you have your work cut out for you. The easy way is to strip the dye and start over with color remover. But this is really hard on your hair, and you will have to find a color that dyes well over orange. The other option is more time consuming, but much easier on your hair.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Highlighting kit
    • All-over hair-coloring kit
      • 1

Use a leave-in conditioner in conjunction with your usual hair-care regimen before you dye your hair.

      • 2

Purchase a highlighting kit that promises the lightest results, and follow the directions on the box. Your hair probably won't lighten completely on the first try. This will make your change more gradual and it give you an idea of how it will look in the end. Repeat this step every few weeks until you are ready to proceed to the next step.

      • 3

Pick the lightest shade of blond all-over hair dye you can find, and follow the directions on the box. Leave the solution on for the entire time even if it looks like your hair is "too light." It may not get as light as you would like on the first try.

      • 4

Continue to use your leave-in conditioner daily. Use hair dryers and flat irons as little as possible. Wait at least three weeks before attempting to dye it again. Keep using the lightest possible dye until you reach your desired color.

    Tips & Warnings

    • During the hair-coloring process, wear a towel around your shoulders and clothing you don't mind staining in case any dye leaks onto your clothing.

    • Test the dyes on your skin and a shock of your hair first. If your skin has a reaction, do not use the dye. Testing a piece of your hair will tell you how long you should leave the dye on your hair.

    • Make sure this is really what you want and that you're sure you want to do this on your own. If you are too nervous, pay a professional to do the work.

Bleach DOES strip synthetics hair dye molecules. Color doesn't lift color. You put blonde dye over brown DYED hair and nothing will happen but damage. Blonde won't lift blonde dye. Been there, done that. It does nothing but damage your hair. Bleach your hair will a toning bleach (usually blue or violet in color) and THEN put dye over your bleached hair. It WILL take the color. Be sure to conditioner after. BE SURE TO.
