Acting class in Los Angeles

As the capital of the entertainment industry, there are plenty of acting classes in Los Angeles. From basic scene study classes to on-camera workshops, you can find virtually any kind of acting class you need in this large city. Here are some ways to find acting classes in Los Angeles that suit your personal taste.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  1. Step 1

Determine the type of acting class you would ideally like to take. Common class types may focus on comedy, improvisation, drama, scene study, cold reading, audition technique, on-camera work and commercial acting. Once you know the type of class you'd like to take, it will greatly help to focus your search.

  2. Step 2

Conduct an online search for acting classes in Los Angeles that fit your criteria. Only search for the type of class you've determined you want to take, such as "improv class" or "comedy workshop."

  3. Step 3

Read online acting forums such as Showfax and Back Stage. In these forums, fellow actors share advice and experiences on a variety of different acting issues, including acting classes. You can search for a specific instructor and see what others have to say about him. You can also simply search for recommended acting classes and see which places are well-liked. If you have a particular class you are thinking about, post a question to the group and see what kind of feedback you receive.

  4. Step 4

Talk to friends you have in the business. Even if you don't have any friends who are actors, you can garner advice from friends in other positions such as casting directors, entertainment executives or writers. As Los Angeles is such an entertainment-based area, many people are aware of recommended acting schools and may be able to give you some tips.

  5. Step 5

Discuss acting classes with your agent or manager, if you have professional representation. Your agent or manager may have a particular acting teacher she likes. If other actors she represents have had good experiences and results with a particular teacher, she may send you his way.

  6. Step 6

Choose a few classes that interest you and contact them. Ask if you can audit a class to get a feel for the environment. Once you audit, you can see if the class feels like a good fit for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider the instructor, pricing and class time when choosing an acting class. All should work well with your situation.
  • Once you join a new acting class, give it a few weeks before you form an opinion on the place. Sometimes it takes a little while to fully experience the new class.
  • An acting class should be a safe environment where you can learn and grow. If you feel at all threatened or uncomfortable, discuss it with the teacher. If the teacher is unwilling to talk about the situation with you, choose a new class.
