Is your PS3 hard drive filling up? This can happen rather quickly, as game installs and media files can take up a lot of room. One option that you have available to you is to buy a separate hard drive for your PS3. A separate external USB hard drive can be hooked up to your PS3 and you can store all of your media files on it. This will clear up some room on your main hard drive for more game saves and installs. Here is a list of steps that you can take to purchase a separate hard drive for your PS3.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider how much room you will need. A bigger drive is recommended, as media files can take up quite a bit of room. Sony will also be implementing many new video services for the PS Store that will allow a direct download of digital content. Firmware 2.40 upped the availability of in game custom soundtracks, so having lots of music files on the hard drive is something you may want to invest in.

  2. Step 2

Shop around for the best value you can get. You will want to get as many gigs of storage as you can for your media files, for the best cost. External USB hard drives can be very expensive, but having one will effectively turn your PS3 into a media hub for your living room, so it’s entirely worth the cost.

  3. Step 3

Purchase your hard drive. To get the best price for an external hard drive, you may need to shop online. Computer Geeks or Newegg are two good places to look for parts at a decent price. Be careful when buying cheap, you will want to look out for refurbished products. Refurbished hard drives can also work pretty well, but if you decide to take this route in purchasing your separate PS3 hard drive, it may be a good idea to pick up a warranty along with it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you have your external hard drive, you can use it to back up your game saves on your regular hard drive. Make this a routine, as sometimes hard drives can go out, and if that happens you will be grateful that you backed up all of your hard earned saves.
