Filing a renter's insurance claim is generally unpleasant, but it does not have to be. You paid for the coverage and so it should be there for you when your hour of need arrives. This is your home, and you want restitution when an unfortunate event, accident or loss occurs. Here are some ways to help you file a renter's insurance claim.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Document all your losses as best as possible. You can do this by making a list of loss of material items, or describing the accident. Use as much detail as possible. Include photographs and witnesses if possible.
Step2
Consult the back of your renter's insurance policy card. There should be a telephone number listed that is dedicated only to claims related issues. If you cannot find a claims number on there, try your actual renter's insurance policy.
Step3
Call the toll-free number listed. Be prepared to be on hold. In the case where you have an agent, just call the agent directly and let them assist you in opening your renter's insurance claim case. When you call, have your policy number handy as well as any other pertinent information. It is a good idea to have the policy in front of you so you can give the information quickly.
Step4
With some renter's insurance policies, insured members can file claims or start a claim process online. If that is the case, consult your policy for the insurance company's website and then look for "file claim" or "claims" on the website menu. Make sure you print all information related to your case.
Step5
Have a list of the nature of the loss that you will provide for the insurance company customer service representative. If you suffered a loss of belongings or damage of any sort, be prepared to tell the customer service representative what the approximate value was and how the loss occurred. This could be due to fire, flood, theft or accident. Be sure to list everything, as it all will add up. Ask for a claim reference number before you disconnect the call, as well as the first name and last initial of the person you spoke with. This will expedite matters should there be any problems or if you have to call back.
Step6
Set up a time at some point, for the insurance adjuster to come and view the damage. Supply photographs, lists and any other documentation at that time.
Step7
Do not sign any documents or accept any settlements until you have explored all avenues, including knowing the replacement values of items lost or damaged.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to call during off-peak hours such as mid-morning or after 7 p.m. on the weekdays so you will spend less time on hold.
  • Do not use a cell phone to file your claim if you have a limit on your minutes, as you may be on hold for several minutes.
