Crepe paper streamers are great for making simple, colorful paper windsocks for a summertime craft. You can buy a roll of inexpensive crepe paper streamers in the party section of many stores, including some dollar stores. You may want to use a single color of crepe paper, or use several different colors. For the top part of the windsock, you’ll need one sheet of construction paper. The kids can decorate the top of the windsock any way they like, using markers or other basic craft supplies. Older kids can make this craft with little or no help, while younger kids will need help putting yarn or string on the windsock so they can hang it up.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • One roll of crepe paper
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Sheet of construction paper
  • Tape
  • Markers or crayons
  • Stickers or glitter (optional)
  • Hole punch
  • Yarn or string
  • Table or flat work surface

Make a Crepe Paper Windsock

Step1
Cut six crepe paper streamers, each about 24 to 30 inches long.
Step2
Place the short ends of the streamers along the long edge of the construction paper. Overlap the streamers with the construction paper by about 1/2 inch. Tape the streamers to the paper.
Step3
Flip the paper over, taking care not to tear the streamers. Decorate the paper with markers, crayons, stickers, scraps of colored paper or glitter. Leave 1/2 inch along each short edge plain.
Step4
Overlap the short ends of the construction paper about 1/2 inch, forming a tube. Tape the ends of the construction paper together. To make the windsock extra secure, you might want to use tape along the outside and the inside of the overlapping edges.
Step5
Punch three holes close to the top edge of the construction paper, spacing the holes evenly around the windsock.
Step6
Cut three pieces of yarn or string, each about 6 inches long. Insert the end of each piece of yarn or string through one of the holes. Tie each piece of yarn or string to the top of the windsock. Tie the tops of the three pieces of yarn or string together.
Step7
Cut a piece of string long enough to make a loop for hanging the windsock. Slip this piece of yarn or string through the other loops of yarn and tie the ends in a knot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hang the windsock up where it can catch the breeze, but don’t let the crepe paper windsock get wet, since water will ruin the crepe paper.
  • Supervise children when working with scissors.
