Find Transportation in Cuba

Traveling in a foreign country can be difficult, especially if you don't know your way around. Fortunately, Cuba, as a rule, has plenty of public transportation that is easy to use and very efficient. If you're brave, you can also rent a car. The only problem is knowing which transportation to choose and figuring out how to find it.

  1. How to Find Transportation in Cuba

    • 1

Rent a CarRenting a car in Cuba can be expensive, starting at $30 per day, but more often closer to $60 a day. If you have several people, this might be the way to go as it could save you money in the long run, but keep in mind that if you're unfamiliar with the roads and highways, it could be more trouble than it's worth.

Flag Down a TaxiCoco Taxis are a fun means of traveling around and they're inexpensive, effective and a whole lot faster than they look. There are also other taxis, including the taximeter. However, don't expect that you will be the only person in the taxi, because if you don't have a large party, you'll be picking up others along the way. Expect to pay around 8 pesos, a little over $8, to get around the average city, although prices may vary.

Take the BusBuses can go around town or from city to city. If you're going far and are willing to travel around for a bit, the bus will probably be the best bet. Buses, in particular those traveling for long distances, typically have air conditioning which can make your trip considerably more comfortable. If you're traveling long distances, the bus can cost about $50, but the local buses, which have the distinct disadvantage of being unreliable cost considerably less.

Take the TrainTrains also run across the country, but aren't comfortable or as reliable as the cross-country buses, and they typically cost about the same amount. The cars have only seats, there are no beds or restaurants and schedules are not heavily relied upon.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember that when you're traveling in a foreign country, the rules of the road could be different and it's especially important to be wary of other drivers.

  • Negotiate a taxi price before you get in or you might end up paying more than you expected.

  • Use the smaller taxis: the smaller the taxi, the lower the price.

  • Bring change with you because Taxi drivers might pretend they don't have enough to break the amount you give them so they can have a larger tip – or they really might not have it.

  • Check bus routes before you leave so you know you'll arrive at the right destination.
