How to Install Programs on a Computer

Installing computer software is a fairly easy task, though sometimes it gets a little hairy. So if you are having issues, or you have never installed a program on your own, you will be ready to go by the time you finish this! Many issues arise when the computer will not support a function the software requires to run properly; so the largest part of the battle comes with making sure your system will support it when you purchase the program.

Instructions

  1. Installing Software from a Disc

    • 1

After determining that your computer will support the software you want, begin by inserting the disc into your disc drive. Some programs will require a DVD Rom to be installed on your system, as they are too large to be housed on a CD-R.

    • 2

Your computer should automatically detect the software and run the disc. If not, open "My Computer", double click the drive the disc is in, and it should run. If you still have issues from there, right click the drive, and choose the explore option. Look for either setup, or run and double click that file.

    • 3

Follow the instructions of the screen as directed by the program. Choose a directory to install the program in, usually C:/program files. The disc will copy the files to the computer that you need to run the program. Some programs will require restarting your computer, while others will run immediately after install.

    Installing Downloaded Software

    • 4

If you wish to download and install a program from the internet, you should save the file to your hard drive in a location where you will be able to find it, such as "My Documents".

    • 5

After the download is complete, go to the location where you saved the installation file, and double click the file to open it.

    • 6

This should start the installation process, and you should follow the instructions as indicated on the screen. Save the program to the default directory. Restart your computer at the end of the installation if required, and otherwise begin using the program.
