Create a Wallpaper Look with Stencils

Stenciling an entire wall or room instead of wallpapering can create a dramatic look. The end result will give the illusion of fine wallpaper for a fraction of the cost. Depending on the stencil, it can add a dramatic design element to any room. Creating a wallpaper look with stencils is not difficult and only requires a little bit of practice. It is best to try it out on another surface before starting on a wall. This will make it easier when applying it to the wall so that you know how much paint to use on the roller and how to handle the stencil. Follow these instructions on how to create a wallpaper look with stencils to dress up any room in a home.

From Quick Guide: Stamping & Stenciling
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Background latex paint (optional)
  • Tape measure
  • Chalk string
  • Painter's tape
  • Stencil
  • Stencil spray adhesive
  • Paint to be used on stencil
  • 2-inch or 4-inch foam roller
  • Paint tray
  • Rags
  1. Step 1

If necessary or desired, paint the entire wall with latex paint with the desired background color. Allow this to completely dry.

  2. Step 2

Using the tape measure, mark off the width in between each row of stencils at the ceiling and at the floor. If there is molding in place, measure from the edge of the molding. Using chalk string, make a plumb line from the top mark to the bottom mark. In order to make sure that the stencil is placed in a straight line, place painter's tape along the chalk line.

  3. Step 3

Spray the stencil with stencil spray adhesive. Place the stencil against the edge of the wall that meets the ceiling or molding.

  4. Step 4

Using another color of paint, dip the foam paint roller into the paint. Wipe off the excess paint from the roller. Paint over the stencil. When completed, carefully remove the stencil. Using rags, wipe off excess paint from the stencil being careful not to get paint on the back part which goes against the wall.

  5. Step 5

Place the stencil underneath the area that was just painted. Repeat the same process until the entire section from the ceiling to the floor is completed.

  6. Step 6

Move over to the next section. Each section has already been marked off with painter's tape. Repeat the same process until the entire wall is finished. Allow to dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't overload the paint roller with paint in order to prevent splatters.
  • For a varied look, start every other section from the ceiling or molding. Start all other sections in the middle of the stencil that is next to it.
  • Use drop clothes on the floor to prevent damage to floors.
  • Wear gloves when painting.
  • Use two different stencils, one for each section, for a different look.
