1
Read the owner's manual from cover to cover. All snowmobiles just like all cars are not the same. There are certain little quirks and it will save you a great deal of time and trouble and maybe even hard cash to understand your snowmobile and all of its features before you start using it. After you have done that, use this safety checklist each season to make sure it's good to go in safety.

Change the spark plugs once a year. If they weren't changed when you put it up for the season, do so now. Check the fuel lines and all the fittings for leaks or damage. Replace these if needed. Check your drive belt for cracking or fraying. Change this if it's needed but buy two of them as you should always have a spare belt on the snowmobile at all times.

Check the track thoroughly for tension and make sure that it is aligned properly. Look for broken cleats and torn or loosened drive holes. Make sure that the ply has not separated any. Examine the skis for alignment as well and check the rods to make sure that they aren't loose or worn. Look at the welds and make sure these are sturdy and not wobbly. Make sure that the bottom of the skis aren't worn too badly to function properly as well. Inspect the chain for tension and lubrication. Check that the shocks are good and look for oil leaks.

Check the clutch and read the owner's manual if it needs to be adjusted. Inspect the brakes for worn pads and make certain that they are adjusted properly.Don't forget to check out your brake lights. Look at all the nuts and bolts on the machine and make sure each one is tightened enough. Inspect the axle bearings and wheels and check the idler wheels. Look for broken welds and inspect the springs and side rails. Next inspect the recoil starter to make sure it functions perfectly.

5
Check with a mechanic if you aren't familiar with some of these functions. Be with him if you can when he fixes it so that you can learn more and save money by doing it yourself next time. If you've done all these things, you should ready for the next snowmobile season.
