Cushing Syndrome is a medical term which refers to a dysfunction in the endocrine system that results when a person's brain is exposed to certain hormones in the body for too long. The term “ectopic” simply refers to types of tumors that can cause the Cushing Syndrome, or other diseases like it, to manifest. People with symptoms may experience headaches, severe thirst, increased urination and in some cases, impotence. Although it may be difficult to prevent this condition entirely, here are some steps you can take to help prevent it.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Prevent tumors. Doctors do not know how to prevent adrenal tumors, but try to make healthy lifestyle choices to prevent the onset of illnesses that may result in tumors in general. Exercise, drink a lot of water and maintain a healthy weight, too. Try to have someone help you quit smoking, if you cannot do it alone.
Step2
Get examined and tested early. It is always a good idea to get regular medical checkups periodically throughout the year, especially if you have any adverse medical history. Talk to a medical specialist about dexmethasone suppression and corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) stimulation testing. These tests indicate whether a patient has tumor producing hormones present in the body. Ask about the affects of adrenal hormones on the brain and body, as well.
Step3
Take medication, supplements or over the counter drugs. Drugs or supplements that boost the immune system may be simple preventative measures for people without adverse medical history. If someone in your family has had problems with tumors, you may want to talk with a doctor about metyrapone and ketoconyzole. These are two types of medications that may effectively prevent ectopic Cushing Syndrome in some people. Be sure to ask about current research regarding these, and other similar medications. Side effects may result.
Step4
Look for alternatives to regular medication and traditional surgery. Recent medical research suggests naturally occurring chemicals found in the immune system prevent tumors from developing. Ask a medical professional about “lymphocytes.” Learn how herbs can affect the body's white cell count to help prevent Ectopic Cushing Syndrome.
