How to Create a Bed Canopy

Decorating a bedroom takes a lot of thought since it is not only the room that we sleep in but also the room that we tend to retreat to for peace and quiet. The easiest way to create an exotic atmosphere in the bedroom is by adding a bed canopy. Including a canopy in the decor will give the room the look of a far away place. There are several different ways that a bed canopy can be made to transform any bedroom into a tranquil getaway.

Things You'll Need

• 3 standard cafe curtain rods
• Tape measure
• Screw driver
• Sheer curtain panels

Instructions

1. When deciding on curtain panels, choose a color that will match the rest of the decor in the bedroom. Pick a sheer fabric that is light weight and sheer such as silk or tulle. Measure from the ceiling to the floor to determine the length of the curtain panels that will be needed.

2. Determine how far out the curtains will extend on each side of the bed. This is the size cafe curtain rod that will be needed for each side. Now measure the width of the bed. This is the size curtain rod that will be needed for behind the bed.

3. Multiply the width of each cafe curtain rod by two. This total is the width of the curtains that is needed for each rod in order to create fullness. Depending on the size of the curtain rod, 2 or 3 curtains panels may be needed to fill each one.

4. Install the cafe curtain rods according to the manufacturer's instructions. The curtain rods used for each side of the bed will be installed on the ceiling starting at the wall. The curtain rod used behind the bed will be installed directly to the wall. Make sure that each end of the rod behind the bed meets the rods installed on the ceiling.

5. Install the curtain panels to each rod and allow to hang freely. Make sure that each curtain rod is completely covered with fabric.

6. If desired, use rope or beads to tie back the side curtain panels. This will allow more light over the bed area.

Tips & Warnings

• Hang the curtain with clip rings for a different look.

• Tab top curtains can also be used.

• Mosquito netting can be used for a tropical look.

• Using these instructions, a canopy can be made to enclose the entire bed as is illustrated in the photo.

• Make sure curtain rod is securely installed so that it will not fall. To install curtain rods more securely, try to install into a stud.
