Electronic resumes are important for freelancers, especially for writers and reporters, because editors often prefer resumes, clips and letters of recommendations to be emailed rather than receiving a hard copy.

Resumes are what potential employers see before they ever set eyes on us and what determines whether they will ever meet us for that all important interview. A resume is usually a simple listing of your education and past work experience along with professional and personal references. When you’re a freelancer, a resume can become a little tricky to write. Here’s how to write a resume as a freelancer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Writing clips
  • Photography clips
  • Websites where your on-line portfolio can be viewed
  1. Step 1

Put your name, address, email address and your professional website address, if you have one, at the top of the resume.

  2. Step 2

List an objective. State that you are a freelancer; the number of years of experience you have freelancing and what position you are applying for this. For example: My goal is to further my career as a professional writer/reporter/photographer by acquiring freelance opportunities or in a staff position (if you're interested in joining a staff) with an established publication.

  3. Step 3

List your skills as they pertain to your line of freelancing. For a writer or a reporter, your typing speed isn’t quite as important as that of a secretary or administrative assistant, but it is still important because it shows that you are capable of typing and getting a story out by deadline. Organization is an important skill as a freelancer because you work alone.

  4. Step 4

List your educational background and any clubs, groups or organizations you belong to. List in what capacity you have used your freelancing skills.

  5. Step 5

List your work experience, emphasizing jobs where you utilized your freelancing skills.

Tips & Warnings
  • Provide three to five clips of your work. Select clips that is close to the work you would be doing for this potential client/employer if hired.
  • Ask clients and past employers to write letters of recommendation for you and provide copies with your resume.
  • Never lie on a resume.
