How To Make A Raggedy Patchwork Pillow

  1. Step 1

Cut nine 5 inch squares of quilt batting and nine 7 inch double squares of fabric. (A double square is when material is folded, then cut to specific dimensions, with folded side as one of the edges.)

  2. Step 2

Place one square of quilt batting in the center of a fabric square.

  3. Step 3

Pin batting in place making sure that the "pretty" side of fabric is showing.

  4. Step 4

With a sewing machine, sew diagonally across the fabric square, going through all 3 layers. Continue to sew until all nine squares are sewn with two diagonal stitches, forming an "X" on each fabric square.

  5. Step 5

On a flat surface, place the nine fabric squares in the order of how you would like the pillow to look.

  6. Step 6

Place the pretty sides together of the top right square and the middle right square. Stitch a 1" seam. Next, attach the bottom right square in the same manner and the right row is completed.

  7. Step 7

When all three rows are completed, stitch the three rows together with a 1 inch seam. First attach the center row to the right row, followed by attaching the left.

  8. Step 8

Choose a fabric for the pillow's back. The fabric should be a color that coordinates that patchwork pieces together. Cut the fabric to the size of the pillow front.

  9. Step 9

Place the backing and the pillow's front together, pretty sides out. Pin the outer edge, leaving a 4 inch opening to stuff the pillow. Stitch a 1 inch seam around the outer edge of the pillow.

  10. Step 10

After seams are sewn, cut small slits around the pillow edge. The smaller the slit, the more "raggedy" the pillow will be.

  11. Step 11

Wash fabric in cold water and dry and dyer. In the washing a drying process the slits will become frayed. Stuff pillow with fiberfill and stitch opening close.
