1
Develop the basic plans for the project. This may involve using plans obtained from a craft store, or even coming up with an original design. If creating your own design, make sure to determine the measurements for the length of the cab and the body of the truck, as well as the height. Also determine the measurements for the wheels.
-
2
Create the basic components. Using the plans or original design as a guide, sketch the outline for the basic components from the wood. The thicker cuts of wood can be used for the basic outline of the cab and body, while the thinner cuts can be used for the wheels and any detail work on the body and cab.

3
Determine the position for the wheels. This will include wheels for the cab section as well as the body. Generally, the design will include at least six wheels, but can include more. Mark the positions using the pencil.
-
4
Drill the holes that will be used for the axles on the toy truck. Also, drill the same size holes in the middle of each of the wooden wheels.
-
5
Insert the small dowels through the holes and slide the wheels into place onto the exposed ends of the dowels. Use glue to secure the wheels into place. The holes for the axles should be slightly larger than the dowels, making it possible for the wheels and axles to move freely.
-
6
Use small pieces of wood to create the outline for doors, a window shield, or any other detail desired.
-
7
Paint the finished product, or use a coat of varnish to seal the wood. The toy truck can be painted in one or more colors, or simply sealed with varnish to ensure the wood does not splinter during use.

Tips & Warnings
This simple process can provide the basis for creating highly detailed wooden toy trucks that have working doors and tailgates, or provide a simple toy that is only a few basic components. Allow your imagination to run wild.
Always seal the final product before allowing a child to play with the wooden toy truck. The sealant will help to minimize the chances of a splinter separating from the body during play and scratching or otherwise hurting the child.
