Impress your friends with this homemade soda pop recipe. Unlike store-bought pop, this concoction is carbonated naturally by using bicarbonate of soda and tartaric acid.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 qt. water
  • 1 tbsp. vanilla
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 4 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 3 egg whites, beaten until stiff
  • Tartaric acid powder ( get this from wine-making supplier)
  • Bicarbonate of soda

    Make Homade Soda Pop

  1. Step 1

Heat water until it is almost boiling, and dissolve the sugar and cream of tartar into it.

  2. Step 2

    Add vanilla, stir and cool.

  3. Step 3

After mixture has cooled, add egg whites, and stir, before refrigerating.

  4. Step 4

When you're ready to serve the drink, dissolve 2 tbsp. of the syrup, plus 1/4 tsp. acid powder for each 8 ounce glass of very cold water.

  5. Step 5

Here's the "Pop" part. Add 1/2 a tsp. of bicarbonate of soda, and stir. Your soda will be popping, and your friends will be very impressed!

Tips & Warnings
  • Use 1/2 tsp. of lemon juice per glass if you have to substitute the tartaric acid. If you really want to keep it simple (though not as impressive,) use carbonated water in place of bicarbonate and tartaric acid and ice water.
  • Carbonated drinks will build up pressure, if capped. To avoid injury, never shake or remove the top of a carbonated beverage directly under your face.
