Instructions

    • 1

Purchase soap flakes. You really have your pick here: Ivory or Castille to name a few. The main thing is to make sure that the soap flakes are mild and gentle. If you purchase soap flakes, there is nothing else to do with them. If you purchase a bar of soap, however, you need to grate it so that you will end up with your 1/2 cup of flakes. Once you have purchased your soap, you are ready to begin.

    • 2

Prepare to make the soap. Put the pan on the stove and add the water. Using spring water ensures that you make a pure, natural shampoo. Tap water is okay, but there are chemicals in processed water. If you want a completely natural shampoo, use spring water.

    • 3

Get a bowl and put the soap flakes in it.

    • 4

Boil the water. When the water begins to boil, pour it over the soap flakes.

    • 5

      Add the glycerine.

    • 6

Stir the water and soap flakes. The flakes will eventually dissolve. Cover and let this mixture cool.

    • 7

Add other ingredients. If you wish to have a certain scent, you can add essential oils. You have wide berth to add what you want. Lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, and orange are just a few essential oils that you can try. Add 2 to 3 drops of essential oil once the soap mixture has cooled.

    • 8

Store the shampoo. When your new shampoo is cooled, store it in a plastic container with a lid.

    • 9

Wash your hair. Try out your shampoo. Remember that shampoos made this way will not lather up like commercial shampoos. This does not mean the shampoo is not working, however. Your new, homemade shampoo is just as effective at cleaning your hair. You will notice a bright shine and soft feeling to your hair now that you are not using harsh chemicals.

Tips & Warnings

  • Essential oils are strong and a little goes a long way.

  • Do not use essential oils directly on the skin or scalp. Essential oils are highly concentrated and many will cause a burning sensation or skin rash if applied directly to the skin. As with any products, if you experience shortness of breath, swelling of the mouth, tongue, or lips, contact a doctor immediately as you may be having an acute allergic reaction.
