Things You'll Need:
- Water
- Lawn
- Hose
- Sprinkler
- Weed & Feed
- Fertilizer
- Spreader
-
Step 1
Water your lawn every other day. Don't water in the afternoon (unless you have children who want to run through the sprinkler), the ground does not hold the water in very well in the afternoon. The best time to water your lawn is in the evening. It'll hold the water in overnight and sufficiently hydrate your lawn.
-
Step 2
Scotts Deluxe Edgeguard Broadcast SpreaderAbout every 30-45 days you should fill up a spreader (as seen in the picture to the left) with fertilizer. There are a lot of different brands and types. I personally use Scott's and have found the results to be the best. They have fertilizers specifically for drought times, lawns with weeds, lawns with bugs, etc.
Be generous with how much you spread on the lawn. Don't put too much, but put enough so that your lawn gets thicker, greener, and healthier. On my spreader I use a higher setting to spread more fertilizer throughout the lawn. Try at setting 3 1/2 when you start, and if you need more, use a higher setting the next time you fertilize. -
Step 3
Sometimes bugs are the problem in a lawn. So use something like Scott's fertilizer and pest control.
-
Step 4
Weed-B-GoneIf you have a weed problem and a simple weed and feed spread doesn't work at killing the weeds, try a one of the many spray solutions available at your nearest hardware or home store. These are the ones that hook up to your hose and distribute the weed killing chemicals evenly. There are several brands that work great for killing weeds and not lawns. Read the labels carefully because some are intended to kill grass too (these are meant for killing green life in cracks in driveways and sidewalks).
Some of these (like Weed-B-Gone) can show some results in 8 hours. Let the chemicals work for about 2 days before you mow the lawn or anything. This will allow the chemicals to penetrate the roots of the weeds and successfully kill them. -
Step 5
Miracle-GroOccasionally spray your lawn with Miracle-Gro. Like Step 4, get the sprayer/dispenser that connects to your hose, this will evenly distribute the food. I discovered how soft and dark green my lawn gets from spraying it with this because I was spraying some plants and young trees with it, and the neighboring grass became very lush, soft and dark green (very ideal looking). If you water your lawn every other evening, you should use this stuff 1-2 times a week. After about 5 applications you won't need to use the food anymore, you can just set up the sprinkler to maintain the nice lawn.
