How to Edit a Bitmap
Bitmap images have been used for a number of purposes for decades. If you have a bitmap on your computer that doesn't quite meet your needs, you'll be pleased to know that these images are generally quite easy to edit in order to make them however you would like them. Most image editing software can edit and save bitmaps, including basic programs such as MS Paint and more advanced programs such as Photoshop or GIMP. Read on to learn how to edit a bitmap.

1
Open the bitmap image that you want to edit. This can be done either by pressing "Ctrl+O," or choosing the "Open" option from the "File" menu, or pressing the "Open" button on the user interface of the program that you are using. A box should open allowing you to select the file that you want to edit. When you've made your selection, press "OK" to open the file.

Though the editing options will vary from one program to the next, you should have a number of options available to you even with the most basic of editing programs. You can add text, paste parts of other images onto your bitmap, add color, or even draw additional parts of the image which might not have been present previously. Make whatever changes you wish to the bitmap that you have opened, making use of the "Undo" function if you make a mistake.

When you have made all of the edits that you want to make, save your image by pressing "Ctrl+S," choosing "Save" from the "File" menu, or pressing the "Save" button on the user interface. If you are wanting to save your edited version as a separate image so that the original bitmap is unaltered, choose "Save As" from the "File" menu instead. Choosing "Save As" will open up a new box where you can enter a new file name or select a different save location for your edited bitmap.

Tips & Warnings
Depending on the program that you are using, a number of effects may be able to be added to your bitmap while you are editing it.
If you make a mistake and aren't able to use "Undo" to remove it, close the image without saving in order to restore it to its last saved state; note that this will only be useful if you save often, or else it will remove a number of other changes as well.
Make sure that you save any images that you are editing often in order to keep from losing the work that you do in case the computer crashes or there is a power outage.
