How to Benefit From OCD Counseling
-
1
Be completely willing to engage in the process. Counseling for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is not easy, and unless you are willing to give it a real try then you may not be able to benefit from the counseling. This is one particular venture which will require a great deal of effort on your part.

Make sure the counselor is qualified to help you. There are plenty of counselors certified to treat a wide variety of clients, but if you want to have the highest chance of benefiting from the counseling then you should seek out a counselor with extensive education and experience with OCD patients. Ideally, look for a counselor who works in an OCD clinic.

Employ methods outside of therapy. You can't work hard in counseling and then go right back to your usual behaviors the second you step foot outside of the counselor's office. You need to use the methods you're learning constantly; otherwise you'll only experience small, temporary benefits while in counseling but nothing will change for you outside the realm of your counselor's office.

4
Adopt relaxation techniques to accompany the counseling. People suffering from OCD often experience a great deal of stress when they try to behave in a contrary way to what they are used to. This is why it is so important to learn breathing techniques, imagery and other stress relievers in order to deal with the difficulties you'll undoubtedly experience along the way.
-
5
Give yourself plenty of time. OCD does not disappear overnight, no matter how effective and educated your counselor may be. You may be ready to change your life right this very moment, but you have to give yourself time. Don't get frustrated if it takes a lot longer than you thought to shed your OCD tendencies.
