Witch bottles, also known as charm bottles are commonly used for spellwork and make wonderful additions to any home as decoration. There are many varieties of approaches to making witch bottles. The type of bottle you choose should reflect both your intent, as well as your magical nature. For the purpose of this How To, we will cover how to make a witch bottle that is representative of the element of water, which can be used as decoration for an altar.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Glass bottle with lid
  • Sand
  • Sea shells
  • Starfish (size suitable to fit in jar) (optional)
  • Flower petals (from those flowers growing near a lake or stream)
  • Greenery (such as grasses) (from a lake or stream)
  • Pebbles (found near a lake or stream)
  • Ribbon representing the element of water
Step1
Be sure to clean the bottle and lid before starting this project. After you have washed each thoroughly, allow both to air dry.
Step2
Fill the bottle with some sand to make a foundation for the rest of the materials to rest on.
Step3
Add the pebbles and sea shells alternately to the bottle. After you have added these, add a bit more sand.
Step4
Once the bottle is about half full, add the flower petals and greenery. Depending on the look you want for the bottle, the amounts and items you put in the bottle are strictly up to you. There is no right or wrong way to make the bottle. Keep in mind your intent while making the bottle and envision what you want it to look like.
Step5
After you have all the items in the bottle, affix the lid. Tie the ribbon around mouth of the bottle near the lid as a final touch.

Tips & Warnings

  • When picking flowers and greenery for the jar, remember to ask permission of the flower first and to leave a gift in return.
  • When choosing a bottle to use, it can be clear or tinted glass.
  • Mason (or canning) jars work great.
