Just like humans, cats can have diarrhea. And just as with humans, a bout of diarrhea that lasts longer than 24 hours can be dangerous to a cat's health and cause more problems. But vet bills will add up quickly if you run your cat to the doctor every time he has a little diarrhea. That's why it might make sense for you try to treat him on your own first.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rice, pasta or potatoes
  • Hamburger meat
  • Water
  • Electrolyte-filled water
  • Metamucil
  1. Step 1

Change the cat's diet. Take away any food that has dyes and other added or artificial ingredients. These added elements are harder for the cat's body to digest. You want to make it as easy for her to digest as possible. Avoid all dairy; so if your cat is used to a saucer of milk, don't give her any more. Make some plain white rice and boil hamburger meat or chicken with no seasoning on it. Cut up the meat and mix it in the rice. This food is easily digested and should help regulate the cat's system.

  2. Step 2

Give your cat lots of water. Diarrhea causes dehydration, so make sure your pet continues to lap up the water. You can even give him electrolyte-enhanced waters such as Propel, which will help replenish what he's lost. Avoid sports drinks like Gatorade, because they often contain artificial sweeteners and coloring, which are more difficult to process.

  3. Step 3

Have your cat fast if the new diet hasn't seemed to help after 24 hours, or has made things worse. Still provide lots of water, but give the cat no food. Also make sure to tuck and lock away all potential food sources that your cat may scavenge in. This includes pantries, garbage cans, other animals' food bowls and kitchen counters. Out of hunger, your cat could potentially eat something that will just make the situation worse.

  4. Step 4

Give your cat half a teaspoon of Metamucil. A bulk-forming laxative has a positive effect on cats with diarrhea. Just add half a teaspoon to each meal of rice and meat, and her system should quickly turn around and become regular again.

  5. Step 5

As with all living organisms, make sure your cat rests. Rest will allow his body to heal. Remove your cat from any potentially stressful situations and make it comfortable for him to simply relax. With some time, your cat should be up and running around like always. Again, cats are just like people: Sometimes they don't feel good and just need some tender love and care.
