Step 1
Check out the serial number. All authentic bags will have a legitimate serial number that identifies the bag as real. Also, check for a "certificate of authenticity," which is a small card usually found in one of the purse pockets that guarantees authenticity by the manufacturer.
-
Step 2
Take a careful look at the stitching. All of the stitching should be even spaced with no missing or loose threads. The color of the threads used should also match the color of the bag.
-
Step 3
Evaluate all hardware. The logo on the hardware should be engraved, not printed or embossed. The logo on a leather bag should also be engraved.
-
Step 4
Check the quality of the materials. Designer bags are always made with top quality fabrics such as leather or suede. The accents are also leather. An authentic designer bag will never have any plastic or artificial accents. Some of the straps on an authentic bag are coated and may look artificial, but take a good look at the core of the strap and you will see that it's real leather. If any of the materials are fake, then the bag is a fake as well.
-
Step 5
Compare authentic bags to known fake ones. Look at pictures of fake bags to familiarize yourself with what a fake bag looks like as opposed to a real one. You will notice some key differences. Train your eye to spot inconsistencies in craftsmanship.
