How to Make a Wool Felt Pillow

Wool felt is a terrific material to work with. Shapes can be easily cut and the edges do not fray. There is no need to turn under the raw edges, making it very appealing for quick projects and fun embroidery stitches. Experiment with wool felt by making a simple wool felt flag pillow. Things You'll Need

  • 1/2 yard red wool felt
  • 1/4 yard white wool felt
  • Scrap of blue wool felt
  • 14 inches of pillow form
  • Ruler
  • 4-inch star pattern
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Hand sewing needle
  • Blue embroidery floss
  • White embroidery floss
  • Red sewing thread

Instructions

    • 1

      Cut two pieces of red wool felt 15 inches square for the pillow cover and the base for the design.

      Cut a piece of blue wool felt 7 1/2 inches across and 6 inches down.

      Position and pin the blue wool felt a 1/2 inch below the top edge and flush against the left hand side of one piece of the red wool felt.

      Attach the blue wool felt by blanket stitching, using two strands of the blue embroidery floss, on the top, the right hand side and the bottom of the blue wool felt.

      Cut one 2 inches by x 7 1/2 inches and two 2 by 15 inch strips of white wool felt.

      Position and pin the 2 by 7 1/2-inch piece 2 1/2 inches below the top edge. One short end is even with the blue wool felt and the other short end is flush against the right hand side of the wool felt pillow front.

      Using two strands of white embroidery floss, blanket stitch the left end and the long sides of the 2 by 7 1/2-inch piece of white wool felt.

      Position and pin the two remaining white wool strips two inches apart on the bottom half of the pillow front. The bottom strip should be positioned 2 1/2 inches above the bottom of the pillow front.

      Blanket stitch the long top and bottom edges of the long white wool felt strips using white embroidery floss.

      Draw your own star or use a cookie cutter and cut out a white wool felt star.

      Position and pin the star to the center of the blue wool felt.

      Blanket stitch the white wool felt star using white embroidery floss.

      Place the other 15-inch square of red wool felt over the finished wool felt pillow front. Pin the edges.

      With red thread, machine sew the two pieces together using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Leave the bottom edge open for turning and stuffing.

      Turn the pillow right side out. Insert the pillow form. Sew the bottom edge closed.

  • Embellish the wool felt pillow with buttons, beads, or sequins, if desired.
