How to Practice Shambhala Buddhism

Shambhala Buddhism was founded by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. He introduced Shambhala to the West in the 1970s. Shambhala practice is based on teachings that are rooted in ancient Buddhist tradition. Shambhala practice energizes life force and connects one to the natural power and energy of the world. The Shambhala path is a warrior path.

Instructions

    • 1

Abide in peace by practicing shamatha meditation--simply breathing. Practice daily for ten minutes.

    • 2

Sit in relaxed, stable posture with lotus, half-lotus or in a chair. Tuck in your chin slightly, holding your mouth slightly open. Gaze downward at nothing. Breathe. Watch your breath.

    • 3

Gather the mind. As you watch your breath, allow thoughts to come and go without resistance or judgment. At first, notice the wild, untamed activity of the mind. With consistent practice, experience mindfulness, clarity and stability of mind.

    • 4

Attend Shambhala Training--the study and practice of Warriorship. Shambhala Training prepares the student for leadership, social action and contemplation as practice. Shambhala Training includes The Heart of Warriorship, The Sacred Path and advanced programs.

    • 5

Attend Dathun, a month-long group meditation retreat. Students observe silence, practice sitting and walking meditation and Oryoki (mindful eating). After completing Dathun, students may attend solitary retreat.

    • 6

Attend Enlightened World: The Three Yanas of Shambhala Buddhadharma, an introduction to Buddhist principles.

    • 7

Commit to Buddhism with the Refuge Vow. Take refuge in the Buddha, the Dhamma (path of works) and the Sangha (contemplative community). Follow with Shambhala Sutrayana Seminary--intensive meditation and Buddhist studies including Shambhala studies.

    • 8

Work with deep commitment and compassion. Take the Bodhisattva Vow. Bodhisattvas forestall their entrance into Nibbana (Nirvana) until all beings awaken. Finally, receive vajrayana transmission to enter into the lineage of Sakyong Mipham.

Nice! Being a part of the Shambhala community for the past 25 years, I'm impressed. You described Shambhala Buddhism pretty well!
