Thick toenails can be caused by many conditions, such as a fungal infection, psoriasis, eczema or trauma. Trauma can involve repeated pressure from a running shoe or from a one-time incident such as dropping a heavy object on your toe. So in some cases, thick toenails are unavoidable, but you can do your best to keep your toenails healthy by following these simple steps.

Cut your toenails regularly to the length of the edge of the toe. Leaving your toenails too long will make them more prone to trauma. If you cut your toenails too short, you may be lifting the toenail off the nail bed, which can also make the toenail thicken.

File your toenails gently to avoid any sharp edges, which may be prone to getting caught on your socks or shoes.

Ensure that your shoes fit well. If a shoe is too short, your toe will knock the end of it when you are walking or running. If your shoe is too loose, your foot will slide forward and hit the toenails, causing them to become thickened.

Tie your laces tight, especially with sports shoes. This will prevent your foot from sliding forward and hitting your toes on the shoe.

Avoid pointy-toed shoes and high-heeled shoes. These shoe styles place a great deal of pressure on the toes.

Visit your podiatrist if you notice any discoloration in your toenails or if you know you have damaged your toenail (such as by knocking your toe on a bedpost). You may have a fungal infection that will cause your nails to thicken up, or you may have a bruise under the toenail. Early treatment is the key to preventing long-term distortion to the toenail.
