Bamboo fencing is fashionable, fun, versatile and can dress up anything from a barren existing fence to a plain Jane shed. You can use bamboo fencing indoors or out in a variety of creative ways. The only caveat with this fun material is its stability. It should always have a very sturdy base and be attached with nails or screws and wire to whatever you are attaching it to. A few simple steps and some hardware are all you need to use bamboo fencing as far as your imagination will allow.

Things You'll Need:

  • Bamboo fencing
  • Nails, wire and other hardware to secure
  1. Step 1

Attach to an existing fence. Perhaps you’re stuck with an unsightly chain link or other fence that looks ugly and affords no privacy. You can place the bamboo along the inside of the fence to add some pizzazz and a much better look than bare metal.

  2. Step 2

Use as its own privacy fence with an existing frame. Bamboo can stand on its own, as long as it’s installed into a frame of heavy wood or metal. Create the posts, top and bottom border of a heavy material, then use the bamboo inside those frames, kind of like placing a picture into a giant frame but that picture is bamboo.

  3. Step 3

Hide unsightly yard items. Bamboo is flexible and easy enough to work with that you can use it in small quantities to wrap around an unsightly post, create a border around an air conditioner unit or place around the outside of your shed. Create a low base of wood at the bottom border of the fencing and attach from there, also ensuring to secure in the inside perimeter of the bamboo if applicable.

  4. Step 4

Employ as creative window borders. Instead of shutters, you can attach bamboo fencing pieces around the outside, or even the inside, of your windows. Bamboo fencing also works well as a borer around mirrors or artwork.

  5. Step 5

Line a room. Because of its tropical look, lining a room with bamboo fencing can turn a boring living room into a jungle-inspired haven. Bamboo fencing also works well for small areas, like bathrooms or meditation rooms.

  6. Step 6

Create fashionable indoor dividers or more hiding spaces. Placing a dividing wall of bamboo fencing to hide a cache of file cabinets, appliances or other indoor items turns an eyesore into a joy. You can also set up small dividing walls to block off your computer area or separate any room in a fashionable way. The ends of your indoor dividers can be nailed and wired directly to the wall or secured with a border at the ground level.

Tips & Warnings
  • Attach bamboo to existing fencing by intertwining wire around the existing fencing and the bamboo.
  • Bamboo fencing can be attached to metal by drilling a series of screws into the metal, leaving a small portion of the screw head sticking out, and then winding wire around the screw heads, between bamboo slats and over the bamboo.
  • Bamboo comes in many widths, colors and styles. Pick one that best matches your home’s existing décor and overall theme.
  • Bamboo fencing standing alone should not be used as the only outdoor fencing. It will blow over or be easily knocked down or cut through by thieves. Make sure it’s always secured by something that withstands wind, hail and people who want to break in and take your TV.
