Step 1
Inspect your current roof. Make sure your home is suitable for a tin roof. If the pitch is too high or there are hard-to-reach corners, you may want to try another type of material. Put on work boots and safety gloves. Remove old roofing materials and nails so you can start with a clean surface.
-
Step 2
Lay sheets of roofing felt over the entire surface. Roofing felt will keep the noise level to a minimum on rainy days and help keep bugs and other creatures from getting inside. When laying roofing felt, overlap each piece to cover any open areas.
-
Step 3
Measure your roof from the crown to the gutters to determine how long each sheet should be. Using a chalk line, draw a line for each sheet. This line will help you keep the tin sheets straight. Cut tin sheeting using tin snips. Once you've cut enough strips, you will be ready to attach them to the roof frame.
-
Step 4
Start at the leftmost point on your roof. Place a sheet of tin using your chalk line for reference. Use roofing nails and a hammer to secure the tin sheeting. Two nails for every foot should be enough to secure the sheet. Move to the next sheet and attach it to the roof. Overlap each sheet to ensure that there are no exposed areas. Continue until the entire roof is covered.
-
Step 5
Using roofing cement, fill in the spaces between each sheet. This will help keep your roof safe from water, insects and animals.
