Six Back to Five Poker is a variation of draw poker that helps fix one of the biggest complaints about draw poker. The complaint many players have is that there are only two betting rounds, and many players fold early. Six to Five Poker tries to fix that by dealing an extra card to each player to begin the game.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Gather your friends together to play an evening of Six Back to Five Poker as part of your home poker night. Six Back to Five Poker does has one significant limitation, and that is the number of players who can play. There can be only five players in a game of Six to Five Poker.

  2. Step 2

Deal six cards face down to each player. Once all the players at the table have six face-down cards, players can view their own cards.

  3. Step 3

Conduct a betting round with the player to the left of the dealer starting the wagering.

  4. Step 4

Discard up to four cards each. Explain to players that they will receive back one less card than they discard.

  5. Step 5

Deal cards face down to each player equal to the number of cards they discarded, minus one. This results in all players having five cards after they discard cards and receive their replacements. That is why the game is known as Six Back to Five Poker.

  6. Step 6

Conduct a second betting round. This time the player who is two seats to the left of the dealer begins the betting round.

  7. Step 7

Reveal your cards. All players who have not folded in the hand reveal their cards and declare their hands. The player with the best poker hand wins the pot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Six Back to Five Poker gives you a better chance to play for flushes and draws when determining which cards to discard. Keep in mind, though, that you will get one card fewer than you discard. In the end, it is still a five-card draw game.
  • Six Back to Five Poker is designed to keep you in the hand longer than typical five-card draw poker. Don’t fall into the trap, though, if you have nothing better than a middle pair after you receive your replacement cards.
