Instructions

    • 1

Place cocoa or shea butter in a saucepan and slowly melt over low heat. Alternatively, place butter in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave on reduced heat (about 50 percent) in 15-second increments until melted.

    • 2

Remove the butter from the heat. Immediately add baking soda, cornstarch and citric acid. Stir thoroughly and quickly, so that all ingredients will be completely combined before the butter begins to harden.

    • 3

Add about 10 drops of your favorite essential oil and stir again, thoroughly. You can add more or less essential oil depending on what suits you.

    • 4

Pour the mixture into molds or ice trays. Allow to sit and harden for at least two hours. It may take longer for the melts to harden depending on the humidity in the air.

    • 5

Turn the molds over when the bath melts are completely hardened. Because of the butter and oils, they should simply slide right out. Place the melts in a pretty container and store in a cool, dry area. To use, simply drop a melt into your bathwater and let it melt away your day.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use fragrant oils in place of the essential oils.

  • If desired, you can add a few drops of food coloring for color.

  • Food coloring can stain your bathtub, so use sparingly.

  • Bath melts can make the tub slippery, so use extra care when getting in and out of the tub.
