Camping in Connecticut is fun and available. The northwest hills of Connecticut are a lovely place to start your vacation. The White Memorial Foundation has about 5,000 acres of prime woodlands on the edge of Bantam Lake in the Litchfield area, where you can find camping, cottages and even luxury hotels. The Mayflower Inn of Washington is noted for a first class spa and fine dining experience. If you are more of a wilderness warrior, try the Point Folly campground with either a tent or an RV.

Explore the coastline. Mystic Seaport and the Aquarium are located on Long Island Sound in the southeastern end of the state. Step back in time and tour an old tall ship or whaler at the seaport. Beluga whales and dolphins perform to delighted-though soggy-audiences several times per day at the Mystic Aquarium. A smaller aquarium is located on the southwestern shore, the Norwalk Maritime Center, which is only about an hour from New York City.

If shopping is your passion, you have come to the right place. From Clinton Crossing on the coast--with dozens of outlet stores--to the LL Bean Outlet store in Orange, you will find what you need. The new Cabelas store in East Hartford features a indoor mountain museum of local animals and a gigantic walk through fish tank. If you're not planning to be near the coastline, there are excellent malls in West Hartford, Waterbury and Danbury.

Connecticut has abundant clean lakes and rivers throughout the state and many feature public beaches. On the coast, some of the nicest beaches are at Rocky Neck State Park in Niantic and Hamonasset State Park in Madison. Swimming and wading are very enjoyable and the ocean water depth is quite gradual on Long Island Sound beaches. Bring your pail and shovel and collect the numerous sea shells. Camping is also available at both of these locations. Call ahead for reservation information and park guidelines.

History buffs will delight in a grand tour of the Mark Twain House in the Hartford area or south of Hartford, the Gillette Castle. Don't forget to pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on the lovely and extensive castle grounds. If architecture is your passion, visit the only Roman Catholic Basilica in downtown Waterbury, the Immaculate Conception.

A true hidden treasure for architectural enthusiasts is the Norfolk Public Library in the northwest corner of the state. In the winter, they frequently light the large stone fireplace to keep their patrons warm. While you're there, stop down the block at the Speckled Hen Pub, which has the largest selection of beers in the northeast. You will be amazed at the gentle rolling hills of beauty you find in Connecticut.
