A frontside grind is one of the simplest grinds to master on a halfpipe or quarter pipe. It is also a gateway trick to many more interesting and more difficult tricks.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Skateboard
  • Half pipe or quarter pipe
  • Helmet
  1. Step 1

Pump yourself up the transition of the quarter pipe.

  2. Step 2

Begin your frontside turn as you ride up the lip of the ramp.

  3. Step 3

Lift up your nose by stepping back on the tail and raising your forward leg.

  4. Step 4

Roll your wheel up onto the pipe rail, and turn your board and body as you grind the rail, so that the back truck is grinding on the pipe rail itself. The front wheel will be tilted just slightly in the air.

  5. Step 5

Twist your body back around as you are grinding. Bring the board back down into the ramp, just as if you are doing a simple frontside turn on the ramp. Keep good body position and your back wheel will come off the rail without hanging up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Body position is essential in mastering any grind. Keep your body centered, balanced and use your momentum to successfully grind a rail.
  • Get enough momentum to perform the trick and then drop back in while carrying some speed, because the grind will slow you down considerably. Always wear a helmet.
